Energy-Giving Food for AthletesMany people believe they only need protein, not fats and carbohydrates. However, limiting carbohydrate intake can affect energy levels, compromise workout quality, and reverse benefits from fitness. Carbohydrates, simple or complex sugars, remain the best fuel for muscles, which store the energy-giving nutrients in the form of glycogen and convert it to energy during exercise. Now, sugars here do not refer to sweet and sugary food items, but naturally occurring sugars in fruits and juices, as well as starches in whole grains. If you are hungry before an exercise routine, you should eat crackers, fruit or bread for quick energy boost. Candy, soda, and donut will not perk you up the way you want to, but rather cause you to feel light, shaky and tired. There are so many energy-giving food out there, but let us tell you about a few. Oatmeal is a heart-healthy whole grain with soluble fibre that not just absorbs unwanted fat and cholesterol, but provides good carbohydrates and B vitamins, as well. Lentil causes lower glycemic response (effects on carbohydrates on blood sugar levels), so you do not experience spikes in blood sugar. It also contains folic acid and dietary fibre. Fig is a good source of good carbohydrates, B vitamins, calcium and potassium that perk muscle function and optimal bone health. Just pop in three fresh figs and you are on the go. Chestnut contains less calorie and fat than most nuts, but gives generous doses of vitamin C, folic acid, and other essential nutrients. One cup of blueberries gives you carbohydrates, fibre, and vitamin C. Yoghurt is loaded with calcium, vitamin B12. Rice bran has carbohydrates, fibre and magnesium and converts glycogen into useful energy. Other energy boosters are whole wheat pasta, sweet potatoes, and oranges. |
